Project Goals:

Students will work together in pairs/groups to plan, build and present a big interactive topic that will incorporate both aspects of Ancient Greece and Measurement along with other curriculum areas.

Students will be working in groups of 2-3 to complete a range of tasks. These tasks may involve multiple aspects so make sure they read the instructions carefully.

Duration: Approx 3-4 weeks

Targeted Grade Levels/Age Groups:Ages 9 and up. Can be adapted for most age ranges and ability levels as well as what tools you have available. Students can work in groups or complete the project individually. can easily be adapted for topics you are doing or instead of doing an Ancient Greek village- create a city of the future, another civilization or measure and rebuild your school!

How This Project Works:

There are a range of different activities to be completed, both measurement related and research in presenting on life in Ancient Greece.

Greek Village Life

Name your village!

You can use __this__ list of names of Greek villages or make your own one up. Translate it into Greek.

eg: Helipolis-Ἡλιούπολις


Find out about life in Ancient Greece. There are a lot of sites out there with information about Greek life, just be aware there are also lots about Modern Greek life so check carefully.
This is a great site to try-


It is important you take the time to do this as your research will directly reflect how you build your own version of an Ancient Greek village. You will need to take note of the websites you use for your references page in the brochure.


Create a Brochure using Keynote about life in your Ancient Greek Village. This should include a number of pages about life in a real ancient greek village and also places to visit in your village with accompanying photos from the village you will build.

Recommended layout:

1. Title page: name of your greek village.
2. Information about your village (1-2 slides) * extra points for including google maps location in the real Greece.
3. Places to visit- housing, agora (market), temples, gymnasia (gym for men), theatre, school, farming areas. This should have information and pictures for each slide.
4. Daily life in Ancient Greece- information that you have used to help your build (2 slides)
5. References

(Remember this is a brochure advertising your village so include pictures and information about the place)

Build it!

Choose a world in Minecraft and build the following buildings/areas using the research you have done to help you be realistic in your builds.

  • You village is made up of 100 people, mostly families. You will need to build suitable housing for these people. At minimum you should have 6 houses enough to house a family of 8. Each house should include sleeping areas, cooking areas, a central courtyard, and place to worship. Include any other areas you think are relevant based on your research.
  • Agora- a town square/market complete with stalls for different produce and goods that would have been sold. Name these stalls based on your research.
  • 3 Temples- there will be one main temple based on your chosen god/goddess. Using research about this god/goddess and their temples, build your temple accordingly. Also choose 2 lesser gods/goddesses to build smaller shrines to.
  • Theatre
  • School
  • pathways around your village
  • Fence around your village. Place a torch at every 10m, a sign every 100m and an entry point every kilometre.

Use images from these builds in your brochure.

Gods and Goddesses

Use the gods list __here__ to choose one main God/Goddess to be the patron saint of your village. Research this god/goddess and find out as much about them as you can. What did they look like, what was their power, did they have a special skill, weapon etc like Zeus and his lightning bolt, what were the temples dedicated to them like?

Choose 2 other gods/goddesses and find out about them as well. You will be building 2 smaller temples to them in your village.

Create a fact file that includes this information as well as pictures and information about the temple you have built in your village. Make sure to include your references and how you have used the actual temple designs to inspire your build.

Measurement activities

These measurement activities will be done in your math books unless otherwise stated.

In all measurement activities 1 block=1 metre, also known as a 1:1 ratio.

1. Measure the perimeter around these buildings. Write the answers in your maths books.

a. Family house
b. Main temple
c. School
d. Smaller temples

f. The perimeter of your entire village.

2. Draw the floor plan for one of the family houses. Label all the rooms and the lengths of each wall.

Find the perimeter for each room including the courtyard. You must rule all lines!


Area is how much space something takes up.

1. Find the area of these buildings. Write the answers in your maths books.

a. Family house
b. Main temple
c. School
d. Smaller temples
e. Agora
f. The perimeter of your entire village.

2. Draw the floor plan for the family house you used in the perimeter activity. Label all the rooms and the lengths of each wall.

Find the area of all the rooms the house you used for the perimeter activity.


Volume is the amount of space enclosed by a shape or object, how much 3-dimensional space (length, width, and height) it occupies. it is always represented by m3

Find the volume of the temple by following this formula. (LengthxWidth) x height

Write the answers in your maths book.

Distance Comprehension Questions

Answer these questions in your maths books. Remember to use the correct unit of measurement for each answer.

1. Measure the distance around your village by calculating the following by using the fence blocks you have built around your village.
a. What is the distance around your village if 1 fence block=1m?
b. What is the distance around your village if 1 fence block= 1.5m?
c. Convert your answer to question a into km.
d. Convert your answer from question a into cm.

2. Using the paths you have build throughout your village, find the distance between these places. Remember that 1 block=1m.

a. the distance from the temple to the agora
b. the distance from the temple to the furthest house.
c. The distance from the agora to the gymnasia
d. the distance if you left the agora and travelled to the temple, then to the other two
e. the distance from the school to the agora

3. How would the above distances change if 1 block=2m?

4. What is the height of the main temple if 1 block:1m

Money in Ancient Greece

Money in Greece is called a __Drachma__.

For our purposes 1 drachma is the same as $1

Answer these questions in your maths books:

1. The cost to build the main temple in your village is $3 per m2. Use the information about the area of the temple to help you find the cost to build your temple.

2. The cost of building a house is $2 per m2. Calculate the area of one of your houses and use this to find the cost of building.

3. You have gone to the market to buy food for your family. How much will you spend if you purchase the following items:

olives- 25D

figs- 45D

oil- 13D

meat- 34D

wine- 67D


1. Monitor students use of Minecraft as griefing and inappropriate language could be used in the chat function. Explain appropriate ways of using Minecraft and get students to work collaboratively on rules for use that everyone agrees on.

How to Join:

1. Students and teachers will each need to create their own individual Minecraft account and download the program to their computers or have access to the app.

I bought an account (about $40NZ) and there are about 6-7 of my class who also have accounts so we haven’t had an issue. Usually there is at least one person who has an account or who can log in for someone. We also have the school purchased app on the ipads which helps! Minecraft does offer an EDU discount if you are buying multiple licenses, but we haven’t gone there yet.
